Frequently asked questions about the HOFA Wall Sails

What are HOFA Wall Sails and what are they used for?

HOFA Wall Sails are stylish, highly effective sound absorbers made from our sustainable PureAkust material, which are mounted to the wall using the included fastening system. They achieve the highest sound absorption class A and reduce reverberation, flutter echoes, and disruptive reflections – significantly improving room acoustics and speech intelligibility.

They are used wherever better room acoustics are required: in offices, living and hi-fi rooms, recording studios, podcast and streaming setups, in restaurants, or in educational institutions.

HOFA Wall Sails are effective from approx. 200 Hz and absorb very effectively across the entire mid and high-frequency range – exactly where the frequencies of speech and most musical instruments lie. In typical applications, they achieve the highest sound absorption class A according to EN ISO 11654.
With the magnetic HOFA PureFix mounting, the distance to the wall can be increased – this can additionally enhance effectiveness in the lower frequency spectrum.

The sound absorption class is a standardized classification according to EN ISO 11654, which indicates how much sound a material absorbs. The scale ranges from Class A (highest absorption) to Class E (low absorption).
Class A means that almost all incident sound is absorbed – making a material of this class one of the most effective sound absorbers available. HOFA Wall Sails achieve this value in typical applications, ensuring a particularly effective reduction of reverberation and disruptive reflections.

Poor speech intelligibility and an overall unpleasant noise level are usually caused by excessively long reverberation and uncontrolled reflections. This is exactly where HOFA Wall Sails come in: they absorb incoming sound over a broadband range, ensuring the acoustic calming of the room. This gives you a clearer, more intelligible sound profile – whether in a conversation, a video conference, or during a podcast.

For optimal results, we recommend mounting the wall sails as close as possible to the sound source (e.g., next to the desk, meeting table, or microphone position).

In recording studios and hi-fi rooms, a controlled reverberation time is crucial for a precise, transparent sound profile. If it is too long, details blur, stereo imaging becomes unfocused, and mixing decisions or listening enjoyment suffer. HOFA Wall Sails effectively reduce reverberation across the entire mid and high-frequency range and additionally absorb disruptive first reflections from the wall before they reach the listening position.

For optimal results, mount the wall sails at the first reflection points of your room (we would be happy to advise you on this). With the PureFix mounting set, the effectiveness in the lower frequency range can be improved by increasing the distance from the wall.

You have two options for mounting:

With sawtooth hangers: The simplest and most affordable option – the wall sails are mounted close to the wall. Ideal if you want a simple, unobtrusive installation.

With PureFix: Here, the sail is mounted using four magnetic brackets with a distance of up to 9 cm from the wall. The wall distance additionally improves effectiveness in the lower frequency range.

Both variants can be implemented quickly and without special tools. You can find detailed step-by-step instructions in our downloads.

In addition to the two mounting options described, it is also possible to glue or screw the sail directly to the wall. We are happy to provide the appropriate mounting hardware upon request.

This depends on several factors: room size, ceiling height, existing furniture, and above all, how the room is used. A recording studio or hi-fi room generally requires more absorbing surface area than an office or meeting room, as a shorter reverberation time is required here.

As a rough guide: for smaller rooms, 1–2 small to medium-sized wall sails are usually sufficient to achieve a noticeable improvement. For larger or acoustically more demanding rooms, correspondingly more are needed.

We would be happy to advise you on how many wall sails your room needs and recommend the optimal placement for the best possible result. Simply contact us.

Yes, very well in fact!

Within the HOFA Style-Line, the wall sails are optimally matched to HOFA Ceiling Sails, Room Dividers, and Desk Dividers – they are made of the same material and match perfectly visually.

For more demanding acoustic requirements, such as in recording studios or hi-fi rooms, they can also be excellently combined with modules from the HOFA Studio-Line – for example, with Basstraps for the low-frequency range or Diffusers for a more natural sense of space.

Wall sails are also an ideal addition in combination with HOFA Acoustic Curtains: while the curtains absorb reflections on window surfaces and reduce noise, the wall sails take over sound absorption on the walls – creating well-balanced room acoustics all around.

HOFA Wall Sails are made of HOFA PureAkust, a highly effective absorber material that is largely made from recycled PET bottles. For example, a wall sail measuring 120 x 120 cm contains approximately 51 recycled PET bottles.

PureAkust is not only acoustically highly effective but also has many other positive properties:

  • tested for harmful substances and allergy-friendly
  • free of formaldehyde and binders made from glass or rock wool
  • odorless and bacteriostatic
  • certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (highest product class)
  • flame retardant (fire protection class B1 according to DIN 4102-1 and EN 13501-1)

This means HOFA Wall Sails combine high acoustic effectiveness with sustainability and health safety – manufactured in Germany.

When buying wall sails, you should pay particular attention to these points:

Material optimized for acoustics: Many wall sails consist of simple insulation materials that were not originally developed for room acoustics. HOFA Wall Sails, on the other hand, are made from a material specifically optimized for acoustic applications, achieving significantly higher absorption values (up to 55% more than melamine resin foam and up to 70% more than convoluted foam of the same thickness). In addition, it is durable, tested for harmful substances, allergy-friendly, and certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Reliable measurements: Ensure that the acoustic effectiveness is proven by independent measurements – ideally sound absorption class A according to EN ISO 11654, supplemented by absorption diagrams from the reverberation room method according to ISO 354.

Manufactured in Germany: There are many cheap imports on the market where quality, freedom from harmful substances, and actual acoustic effectiveness often cannot be verified. HOFA Wall Sails are manufactured entirely in Germany – with controlled materials, high processing quality, and short transport routes.

Consultation and service: Ensure that the provider offers individual acoustic consultation and personal customer service – this way, you always have a reliable point of contact and invest in effective and sustainable solutions.

Yes, absolutely!
HOFA Wall Sails are made of PureAkust and are harmless to health – especially compared to acoustic products made from glass or rock wool. They are tested for harmful substances, odorless, free of formaldehyde, bacteriostatic, and allergy-friendly.

Acoustic effectiveness

Despite its slim material thickness of 40 mm, which gives the wall sail a subtle appearance, HOFA PureAkust offers outstanding absorption performance. With the optionally available HOFA PureFix mounting set, the distance of the sail from the wall can be increased, significantly improving absorption at low frequencies.

In typical applications, the wall sail meets sound absorber class A (according to EN ISO 11654). It has significantly higher absorption than industry-standard products (up to 55% higher compared to melamine resin foam and up to 70% higher compared to convoluted foam of the same thickness).

Wall Mounting Set HOFA PureFix

Like all porous absorbers, the HOFA wall sail benefits from optimal positioning with distance from the wall. Where the sound velocity is at its maximum, the absorber can be most effective. The magnetic telescopic mounts of the innovative mounting set make this possible. The wall sail can be mounted in no time, and the distance to the wall can be continuously adjusted between 4.5 and 9 cm. This measure allows the wall sail to achieve the highest sound absorber class and perform well even at low frequencies.

For Professional Applications in the Recording Studio

A horizontal angling of the wall sail is possible through different settings of the mounts. This allows for an advantageous redirection of first reflections in the area between the listening point and the speakers.
Thanks to the 3/8″ thread, the absorber can be easily mounted on conventional microphone stands. This way, every recording situation, including mobile on-site recordings, can be acoustically mastered.
